BioProfessor of Defense Against the Dark Arts at Hogwarts school for Witchcraft and Wizardry.
Ex-Auror.
Retired from the Ministry after one too many Obliviate spells hit him.

Was a Gryffindor when a Student, with a strong sense of Honor and right and wrong but is not afraid to do "Whatever is Necessary" to get a job done.

Welcome one and all to your first year of Defence against the Dark Arts.
What is this I hear you say?
That you have been learning Defence Against the Dark Arts for years?
No you haven't.
I've read your reports.
I'm impressed.
I'm impressed most of you have survived this long.
I can only assume you are all very, very lucky.
I shall be testing that luck. You can be sure of that.
Luck is not something that can be relied on.
Knowledge is what can be relied upon.
Knowledge, power and wisdom
I will be giving you the first two.
If you have the third then you may well live to enjoy your adult life.
In my class you will see and hear things not meant for young ears.
Tough!
That's why your parents or guardians had to sign a release slip like those used for outings just for you to be allowed in my class!
And yes. There will be outing too.
Next time you are sitting in the Great Hall, merrily eating your food and wondering who your next boyfriend/girlfriend/toy will be. Look to your left and to your right.
The chance is one of the two people you look at will not be alive in ten years time.
My job is to make sure you're not the one missing the reunion.
Now that is understood, I shall introduce myself.
You may call me Professor Marvo.
I spent 20 years as an Auror for the Ministry of Magic.
Yes I did start very young. I was picked to be one of the first to trial the disaster that was the Young Auror Program. Less said about that the better.
I was a student at Hogwarts myself, while I was in Auror training, and was placed in Gryffindor house.
Note I say Placed. I was not chosen by the sorting hat, although we have had a few discussions about where I would have been placed.
You will I am sure find out more about me in time.
In your required books this year is a copy of "Embracing the Light" by Titus Ward.
You will find this an interesting read about a follower of Voldermort (anyone heard saying "He Who Must Not Be Named" in MY class will get detention) who saw the error of his ways in time to change his, and his family's, future.
Read it.
Learn from it.
There shall be tests.
Many tests.
